TRAVERSE CITY – Traverse City Planning Commissioner, Gary Howe announced his candidacy today for one of three City Commission seats open in the 2013 November general election.

Gary Howe 2013_0044cAs a city commissioner, Howe says he will bring a focus to connecting neighborhoods and making streets and public spaces safe today and for the future. “What really motivates me is how decisions made today have an impact on communities for decades to come,” Howe said. “It’s important to think about that every time we repave a street, approve a development or set a new policy.”

Howe sees opportunities for improved economic and social value from infrastructure investments, new land use policies, and support for new entrepreneurs. In addition, he is interested in seeing the city improve communication and outreach to better engage and support residents who want to help their community.

“In my experience, a successful project includes engaging a wide spectrum of interested parties – from the public to professional staff to key decision makers. Pulling together all of these elements from the beginning helps create a sense of trust, transparency, and most importantly community ownership for the decisions made today that will effect us tomorrow.”

Howe has served Traverse City in numerous volunteer roles over the last four years. In November 2012, he was appointed to the Planning Commission. Prior to that, he chaired the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission where he helped implement the Bayfront Improvements and the city’s first off-leash dog park. He is currently a board member of SEEDS, and previously served on  Northwestern Michigan College’s (NMC) International Affairs Forum Lecture Series.

For the last 10 years, Howe has taught World Regional Geography at NMC as an adjunct instructor. He is also a freelance photojournalist whose work can be seen regularly in Edible Grande Traverse and the New York Times. In addition to teaching, Howe blogs about public space, transportation and community issues at

He is an alumnus of Traverse City Central, Northwestern Michigan College, Northern Michigan University, and the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies.
